Into the Woods
It was my first visit to the Bridge Theatre, and I was really impressed. It has something of an old-style musical theatre feel, which added nicely to the occasion.
And so to the show. Wow! I thought it was brilliant. The singing and acting were first class, and the way the woods were used was hugely inventive and entertaining. Being of a certain age, it reminded me at times of Danny Kaye’s “pellet with the poison” sketch and a classic Brian Rix farce — which can only be a good thing. To sum up, a thoroughly enjoyable day. The show exceeded expectations, and meeting new friends is always a pleasure.
Are you sitting comfortably? Good, then I’ll begin. Jack and his beanstalk, Cinderella, Rapunzel and Little Red Riding Hood all end up in the woods together. Does this work? It really does — but more of that in a moment.
We started the day with most of our group meeting at Tonbridge station, followed by a relaxing train ride to London Bridge. We’d deliberately gone up early, giving everyone time to enjoy Borough Market or simply wander before the 2.30pm performance.
After a brief foray into the market — which was very busy — a few of us decided on lunch at a lovely Greek restaurant overlooking the Thames, with a wonderful
view of St Paul’s. A very good decision as it turned out.
We arrived at the theatre in plenty of time and met up with the rest of the group.
