I am looking to stand down as Editor in the near future, not because I don’t want to do the job anymore but, with advancing years and continuing medical problems with my hip, it is inevitable that there will come a time when I will be unable to produce an issue or issues and that would be very problematical for our u3a. It would be ideal if a new editor could be found and I could act as reserve.

Unfortunately, this is a job which cannot practically be shared.

Ideally, a candidate should be computer literate and have: ★ A knowledge of Typography and Typographic design. ★ An understanding of digital printing and its limitations. ★ An experience of using a Publishing programme or a suite such as Affinity, which comprises Publisher, Designer and Photo.

The Journal is presently produced on an Apple Mac, using Pages and the Affinity suite of programmes, but could, of course, be produced on a PC. ★ Pdf editing using pdf Expert and producing amalgamated pdf’s. Should a prospective candidate still wish to use an Apple, I have a spare available for use.

This is not really a true editor’s job, since you do not have to source or originate material for publication. Copy comes from the various sources within the u3a, such as Chair, Theatre, Travel, Group News, Meetings etc., and from individuals. The editor’s job is to amalgamate and display this information appropriately and this entails a certain amount of design and conformity to style. Material for printing is pre-read by our official ‘reader’, Lois Mitchell, before being prepared for the printer and the web site. This entails converting the files to pdf format.

I would be more than happy to provide a full preview to any applicant and also training and assistance to anyone taking the post. This is a really enjoyable and satisfying position.
