Venue: No Fixed Venue

Members of the Cycling Group taking a break

Details:

Join our cycling group and enjoy some worthwhile exercise, make new friends and see the countryside. Weather permitting we meet all year round on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month. Rides are usually between 12 to 18 miles with a stop for coffee and a pub lunch (entirely optional) at the end.

Decently surfaced off-road trails or quiet back lanes are our preference, but occasionally we have to go on short stretches of busier roads. We ride at an easy pace and will always wait for those who might not find it so easy to keep up. Steep hills are avoided as much as possible, but getting off and walking is perfectly fine if the gradient should be too much.

Most people use hybrid bikes but road bikes will be perfectly suitable for the majority of our excursions; e-bikes are also very welcome. It will often be necessary to transport your bike by car to the meeting points, which are typically within a 15 mile radius of Tonbridge, although we do also roam further afield. We encourage lift sharing to minimise the environmental impact. Rides that we have undertaken in the past include:

• Circular rides from Laddingford, Chiddingstone and Yalding

• The cycleways from Tonbridge to Penshurst and Tonbridge to Tunbridge Wells (Dunorlan Park)

• Cuckoo Trail from Heathfield towards Eastbourne

• Forest Way from Groombridge to East Grinstead

• Bexhill to Hastings

All members are expected to take their turn at leading rides, which includes finding a route and refreshment stops, informing everyone where to rendezvous and the characteristics of the ride, such as whether it is on or off-road, distance, level of difficulty and so on. New members will be given plenty of opportunity to learn the ropes before being asked to lead. Details of rides are usually given to members about a week in advance.

Do come and give it a try. However, if you are not sure whether the cycling is suitable for you or have any other questions please do not hesitate to contact the Group Leader.
