THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA – REVIEW
As soon as we took our seats at the Dominion Theatre, we were transported from a bright autumnal London to the glitz and glamour
of New York’s Manhattan, and the offices of ‘Runway’ fashion magazine. Hollywood and Broadway star, Vanessa Williams – best known for TV’s ‘Desperate Housewives’ and ‘Ugly Betty’ (also set in the world of glossy women’s magazines) – was in full ‘Diva’ mode as Editor-in-Chief, Miranda Priestley. All memories of Meryl Streep in the film version were swiftly swept away as Vanessa strutted the stage in
her killer stiletto heels, with some sharp-tongued killer lines to match, and a wardrobe to die for. She was clearly in her element and embodied the true star power of a woman to be both feared and admired.
She was ably supported by a strong cast, whose singing and impressive vocal range were shown to advantage in the catchy musical numbers, from a score by Sir Elton John. Georgie Buckley played Andy, the aspiring journalist who is gradually transformed from ‘geeky girl’ to Fashionista, whilst struggling to maintain her integrity and her relationship with her chef boyfriend. Matt Henry displayed a mellow voice and sympathetic character as Andy’s confidant and friend, whilst Amy Di Bartolomeo was hysterical (in more ways than one!) as Miranda’s put-upon First Assistant, with cut-glass British accent, and providing many of the best comedy moments.
The strong ensemble strutted their stuff with some stylish and energetic choreography, sashaying down the runway for Paris Fashion Week whilst the stage was emblazoned with red white and blue lights. The costumes were dazzling – especially Miranda’s red sequined evening dress – and the set pieces showcased them in all their glory.
All in all, an entertaining and enjoyable way to while away a Wednesday afternoon, and huge thanks to Julie Grimsey for her excellent organisation.
