Celebrating 25 Years as a vibrant part of the Tonbridge community
The Globe - Review by Linda Jones
Our day out to the Globe was terrific, learning so much about Shakespeare’s time. Under the guidance of Julie’s excellent leadership throughout the day.
In the morning we were treated to some great back-stories, from Chris, our tour guide, into the world of the Shakespearian theatre-goer including the order of the seating plan, how they managed the “facilities” during a performance (interesting!) and where the names such as groundlings, box office, rehearsal, and audience come from?...... (this can be your home-work to look them up) but overall people were just as enthusiastic about theatre in those days as we are now.
Apparently, Shakespeare loved Italy, hence where he placed some of his plays, and he actually became a multi-millionaire.
We were recommended to rent a cushion and even a backrest for the production, which were most welcome! In the afternoon, we gathered to watch a performance of The Merry Wives of Windsor, which was a fast-paced, delightfully funny story with the rogue Sir John Falstaff as the main character. It was totally obvious that the cast had a whale of a time giving us their best with the acting.
We were very blessed with the weather, and London was buzzing with tourists, office workers, and school parties coming to watch the proceedings.
A thoroughly terrific day all round!
