Celebrating 25 Years as a vibrant part of the Tonbridge community
Review of the Tonbridge u3a AI Study Day
10th July 2025
The Tonbridge u3a AI Study Day, held on Thursday 10th July 2025 in the OBS Gallery within the impressive grounds of Tonbridge School, was a resounding success. The event drew a keen and inquisitive audience from Tonbridge u3a members, with high levels of engagement throughout a day that proved both informative and inspiring.
After a warm welcome, the day began with a compelling presentation by Alan Freeland titled “How Generative AI Systems Work and How They Are Deployed.” This session built on Alan’s earlier February talk, offering a clear and thoughtful exploration of how AI systems function, how they are aligned with societal values, and the role of guardrails in ensuring their responsible use. His accessible explanations helped demystify a complex subject.
After an excellent lunch with plenty of opportunity for informal discussion, attendees split into two facilitated, breakout groups.
The majority opted for the hands- on workshop, which allowed
participants to experiment directly with AI tools in a structured and supportive environment, guided by a number of facilitators, each of
whom had volunteered to help on the day. The atmosphere was vibrant and exploratory, with many surprised at what they could
achieve even in a short time.
Those who chose the discussion group delved into two thought-provoking topics: How AI Might Transform Society and What Are the Ethical Implications? The discussions were expertly facilitated by Sharon Tringham and Rob McCrae. Attendees engaged in meaningful debate, raising important questions and sharing diverse perspectives in a lively and respectful setting.
The final plenary session brought everyone back together to reflect on the day. Feedback from both groups highlighted how stimulating and enjoyable the sessions had been. There then followed an extended Q&A, which further demonstrated the depth of interest in the topic. The day closed on a high note, with a clear sense that this was just the beginning of many participants' journeys into the world of AI.
The question is, was this review written by a human or by AI?
With thanks to Alan Freeland, Mark Rigby, all the Tonbridge u3a members who volunteered to facilitate on the day, and the Tonbridge
u3a organising team led by David Bell and Dave Rowlands, with help from Rob McCrae, Rosemary Martin, Sharon Tringham and Steve
